What Should You Do If You Miss A Drug Dose When Under Treatment For Depression

ESCITALOPRAM oxalate is the generic name of Lexapro, the SSRI drug introduced in 2002 and is widely prescribed for the treatment of depression and generalized anxiety disorders (GADs). It is the safest anti-depressant in comparison to other members of the SSRI family of drugs as well as to other families of anti-depressants such as tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

However, for Lexapro to exert its optimum healing action, it is necessary to take the drug exactly as prescribed by the doctor without missing a dose. Yet, despite all good intentions, people do sometimes forget - and this forgetfulness applies to taking medicines too, especially medicines like anti-depressants which are prescribed because the mind and psychology are not functioning at their best in the first place. So, what should you do if you have been taking Lexapro and have missed a dose?

The mechanism of action: To answer the question, it is necessary to understand how SSRI drugs work. SSRI is abbreviation for \'selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor\'. As the name suggests, these drugs are selective in their target: they directly influence only the serotonin mechanism in the brain cells. Serotonin is the mood-enhancing neurotransmitter that flows through brain cells. Bad mood, depression or anxiety are symptoms of an irregularity in the availability of serotonin to the brain cells. What if you have missed: It depends on when you remember the miss. If there are several hours to go before it\'s time for the next dose, do take the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. However, if you remember the miss only a few hours before the time for the next dose, skip the one you missed and take the next one as scheduled. Under no circumstances, however, should you take doses at one time because it can lead to unnecessary side-effects, some of which can be quite severe. This applies not only to Lexapro but to all SSRI drugs.
