Management
It is common for anyone half decent to get the promotion to Team Leader. But this job can be dangerous for you if you don't know the territory. In this article, I'll tell you how to get the most out of it and avoid the pitfalls.
It's very common these days to find inside organisations someone called a team leader who normally looks after between five and ten workers most commonly.
Maybe you've just become a team leader or you're thinking about it? Well, I was a team leader so I know what it's all about. It's a very strange world but if you play it right then you can get a lot out of it.
First of all, the money. Remember, if you are a good worker then you do not come for free. You demand and command a quality rate that reflects your high worth. So, whatever you do, do not accept it if your boss tries to make you do this job for free. You have more responsibility so you should pay for it.
A common con is to put a new team leader on a "trial". It's a ruse designed to save the company some money so your boss can impress senior management. Don't accept it and make sure you get paid beforehand or, if they are insistent, then agree to backdated pay and get it in writing in an email. If you become a walkover at this early stage and lack the "balls" then you will get walked over all the time when you are a full time team leader. Show your strength and you will be respected.
The next thing about this job is to always try to delegate as much as you can. Many team leaders become control freaks. They have more responsibility now and any mistakes by their workers reflect badly on them so they decide to do a lot of the important tasks themselves.
Forget it, you will just burn out from stress if you try to do this. You've got to trust your workers to do their job and have a clear process that shows to everyone what is expected of them and what might happen if they slack and don't adhere to the rules. If you set a rule base and someone keeps breaking it then your bosses will know that it isn't you that's the problem but one of your workers.
These are just two of the many, many tips needed to be an effective team leader but they are also two of the most important ones.
