Loan Officers - Can You Get Committed In The Mortgage Business?

Here's something I got from a friend of mine today:

"Here in Chicago, one of the biggest builders has just filed BK. I keep hearing about companies in the housing industry throughout the country doing badly as well. Aren't you afraid to stay in the mortgage business with all the bad things going on in the Real Estate world?" I have mixed feelings about statements like this because on the one hand I have a good friend who is worried about me and the industry in which I make my living. On the other hand I keep hearing bad things about the industry in which I make my living.

Here's the bottom line, the only thing I can control is what I do. I can't control if this company goes out of business or that company lays off employees or if another company thrives. I can't control who opens my marketing letters or who reads my fliers. I can't control who walks in the door and who signs the 1003. I cannot control results, I can only control activities.

In this business, when you start making commitments on what other people will do, you will constantly be disappointed. If you make commitments on what YOU will do, you have just put yourself in an elite group. Take it one step further, don't just make a commitment on what you WILL do, go out and do it! Whether it be going door to door and handing out fliers, visit twenty Realtor offices every day, put ads in the paper, attend networking events, etc. Whatever it is you commit to, DO IT!

If results don't come, that's fine because you know you've done what you've done and then you can decide if you should be doing something else or not. I told my friend that I'm not afraid of doing the right thing in my industry. I can't control if others create fraud, if others are being deceitful, or if others are being honest and up front. All I can do is control what I can do.

I got news for you, if you're not honest then GET OUT OF THIS BUSINESS! We have enough jerks, we don't need another one! (sorry, I had to get that out of my system) If companies are filing BK or going out of business or thriving, that's the way it is. All I know is people will constantly live in houses and people will constantly need mortgages. It's these folks and the people that serve them (builders, realtors, mortgage) that will keep this industry going.
