Jetlag is a common occurrence for people who travel alot. Poor performance is attributed to jetlag, especially by athletes who travel to different countries to play tournaments, games, etc. Even business people blame jetlag for poor judgement and decisions made. This shows us that jetlag affects people not only physically, but mentally as well.
What is jetlag? Jetlag is usually a result that occurs when someone crosses several time zones. This affects the internal body clock and can cause disorientation physically and mentally. Some symptoms of jetlag include sleeplessness, tiredness, malaise, headaches, concentration issues, and loss of drive or energy.
The direction that the travel occurs can have an impact upon the severity of the jetlag symptoms. When people travel westward most experts say that the jetlag symptoms are more moderate than when they travel eastward. Why? Because the internal body clock actually gets an extension of 27 hours when traveling westward. This helps the body to be able to catch up with the environmental changes.
The "circadian rhythm" is increased to more than 24 hours when traveling westward. This is because the time of day is increased and this gives the body more time to adjust to any time changes.
No quick fixes are available to cure jetlag, but there are ways that you can learn to deal with it to decrease your symptoms and be healthier in your new environment.
Here are some tips:
1. One recommendation is to stay outside during the daylight hours. This helps your internal body clock adjust at a faster rate to your new environment and helps in coping with the symptoms of jetlag.
2. Adjusting your bedtime schedule can also help decrease the symptoms of jetlag when you go to a new environment. You will be re-programming your body clock to help it cope with time setting changes.
3. It is also a good idea to eat, sleep, and do normal activities according to the local time setting in the new place, rather than the time setting back home.
4. If you are just traveling for a special event and are an athlete or entrepreneur, you may want to travel to the area early. This will give you time to adjust to the time and environment changes, so that you are at your best for your meeting or event.
Jetlag does not have to be a big problem. With a little adjustment and coping, you can feel at the top of your game no matter how many time zones that you have crossed. Then you can have fun!
