I Have It Coming

Management
Last week, I wrote about my wonderful experience at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. The experience they create and the close attention the majority of employees pay to the customer is incredible. You read how the Disney culture has impacted many business models nationally and locally.
However, sometimes, even with a company like Disney, employees and upper management leave the \"Main-Land\". That is, they walk away from the main point of why they do what they do i.e. \"to serve the customer and grow the company\", and start pushing away and forming \"I-Lands\". Let\'s look at Michael Eisner, CEO of the Disney Corporation.
Eisner has been let go by the board of directors. He worked his way up through the ranks by embracing the Disney Culture and helping to grow the many financial engines of the Disney Corporation. Now, he is being forced out because profits have been declining over the years.? As a result, he is cashing in his stock worth 500 million. 500 MILLION! Does anyone have 500 million coming to them? It\'s a gross, disgusting drain on the assets of the \"Main-Land\".
How about you? Are you forming an \"I-Land\"? How about people you work with? Here are definite signs that separation is occurring:
1) The person becomes increasingly defensive when old paradigms are challenged and change is being pursued.
2) They show a lack of respect for authority.
3) They talk poorly of others? BACKSTABBING!
4) They are less observant to details and get wrapped up in what\'s routine.
5) They feel INSULTED when critiqued.
6) They talk in the \"I\" - \"I can\'t believe this!\" or \"I would never do it that way!\"
We all hop in our boat, once in a while, and push off the \"Main-Land\". We have our little pity party and then dock back-up and regroup. You must become very aware of your behavior and the behavior of people around you.? People forming an \"I-Land\" are a cancer in the corporate culture. It is up to you to monitor your own behavior and try to act as a tug boat, and help to bring those drifters back to port. Don\'t force them. Just let them know why you do what you do, and what will happen if they stay adrift. This is a serious issue with every organization, but with proper attention to isolationist behaviors, you can catch it early while growing your employees and growing the company.
