Even The Greatest Have To Change

Change Management
History is like a wise teacher that should be consulted regularly, so that we do not repeat mistakes and learn lessons that have already been taught. One lesson that has been taught regularly by history, but never really fully learned by some leaders, is that change is a required element to successfully keeping the edge over one\'s adversaries. Leaders need to come to the realization that change should be sought out. Meaning that finding new practices and efficiencies should be a core business strategy or a harsh lesson is sure to follow. Spain is a prime example of a lesson where leadership failed to recognize that even the most powerful and successful country can\'t ignore the need to change.
The year 1492 marked a turning point in the history of Spain that would change the face of the world forever. The New World was discovered (okay, other people found it first, but that is another story) and the vast resources and wealth that it held was to be the catalyst in the rise of Spain as a superpower. In the 100 years following 1492 Spain was a juggernaut of economic, military and territorial expansion. Spain transformed from a simple European kingdom to an empire spanning from the Americas to Asia. It would have been hard for any European to imagine that the Spanish empire would crumble as fast as it rose.
The leaders of Spain failed to see that their vast empire could not rely on nobles, kings and bishops to survive. They failed to implement required changes to administrative and governing institutions that would have better prepared the empire for the effects of so much wealth and power. Greed and corruption marred the empire and blinded the leaders of the impending doom. By 1701 Spain was no longer a superpower and was really a shell of its former self. Had the leaders of the day thought to look around to other countries, like England where the governance was shifted from kings to institutions, they may have been able to prevent such a dramatic and devastating collapse of their empire.
Leaders today, even leaders of successful thriving businesses, must look for ways to improve themselves. Do not for a minute let your guard down, being the greatest one day does not mean you can\'t fall the next. This is a lesson that history has had to teach leaders over-and-over again. Do not allow your organization to become another pupil of this harsh lesson.
