Dealing with Depression

A cold shiver flushes over my soul as I remember the horrible days of depression. I don\'t remember how many years I spent trapped in the dark world but it seemed as if it would never end. The leaves of the trees seemed black, beauty disappeared and my heart cried out for freedom.

I applied for Social Security disability because of severe depression and it was granted. The depression deepened and suicide turned into a viable option yet it didn\'t work. I just kept waking up in emergency rooms. Medication, counseling, hospital after hospital, drug after drug but nothing changed, it ruled my life. The truth is I could never begin to tell you the suffering I went through because of depression. Moreover, if it wasn\'t enough the stigma and the abuse I suffered at the hands of the medical profession created more problems. Believe me; I certainly qualify in this discussion of how to deal with depression. Sometimes it is hard to believe I actually survived to talk about the experience.

Today is different. I am no longer living in depression. Don\'t get me wrong, not every day is a pink cloud experience but I have learned how to deal with it. When I look at my freedom, I have to say the main aspect of my recovery has been a trust in God. I know that sounds so religious and simple but its true. I was in a holding cell waiting transport to the state mental hospital when I truly surrender my life to God. I was still committed to the state institution but life started to change. From that point, I began to deal with three important aspects, which cause my own depression. First, I realized I was a good person. Second, I realized that no situation is hopeless and finally I had hope for the future. Yes, there is much more to my recover but I don\'t think I am going to ramble on at this time. I made it out and if I can make it out anyone can.
