Clicksharp\’s Small Business Blog does not dabble in public policy, demography, or existential crises. Rather, let\’s put the focus squarely on the by-products of our great American obsession. Here are the week-old results of a recent small business survey conducted by Staples, sorted of course in order of ubiquity:

* 98% of small business owners and managers work nights, weekends and/or vacations

* 72% make business phone calls behind the wheel

* 67% do not complete the tasks on their \”to-do\” list each day

* 54% expect to work even harder in 2008

* 52% make New Year\’s resolutions for their business

* 51% dream about their work

* 48% would work even harder if they knew it would double their sales

* 38% don\’t remember the last time they took a vacation

And only 21% wish for more time off in 2008. Read between the lines. Small business owners are making more and more sacrifices, and have begun to view these as necessary to survival. Here\’s one last eye-opener:

84% percent have not yet integrated new media (blogs, podcasts, etc.) into their business models.

What do most small business owners have in common? Typically, it\’s that they all, to some extent, do the jobs of all their employees. They need to drive sales, improve margins, launch products and research markets. (Otherwise they\’d be chairmen and directors, instead of President/CEO\’s.)

Advertising on Google\’s Adwords PPC (pay per click) is the most effective form of internet advertising the past decade or so. For beginners, they can experience the sudden adrenalin rush caused by the thrill and excitement. You can get up and running with your PPC ads in as little as 5 minutes and you can get to see results or sales in a matter of hours if not days. Google rewards those who have the skills and punishes the neophytes. Why? It\’s because every internet marketer must know the Google system and its intricacies before plunging into it. Even seasoned marketers have to tweak their ads once in a while to optimize their performance. What for example your Google ad goes haywire; lots of clicks but low sales conversion, how do you think you can pay your ad bills?

I stumbled on this e-book written by a New England doctor, Jon Cohen that says you can get google ads for free. Is it for real? This must be illegal or a scam or the guy must know somebody inside Google\’s headquarters. So what I did, I ordered his e-book to find out his secret. I read his 125-page e-book which is fairly easy to understand and the 4 power lessons included and found out that it is not free after all. The title is a little deceiving. I mean you still have to pay your adwords bill. The more appropriate title to his e-book should be \”How to Offset your Search Engine Adwords Bills\” and not \”Get Google Ads Free\” cause it\’s not free.

The main secret, which I cannot reveal lies in a single technique. Implemented properly, an advertiser is more or less assured to recover his ad bills in case clicks do not convert to sales. He can even make a profit out of that secret. This book is not only applicable to Google adwords but also to all search engines on the internet, newspapers and magazines. Very clever indeed! What took publishers so long to come up with this book when in fact it has been used by internet advertisers for a very long time. Could this be intentionally or unconsciously done?

But some warning, this e-book is only for intermediate or advanced marketers. If you\’re a newbie, make sure you know some internet basics and are familiar with online terms like web design, squeeze pages and blogs. These could be overwhelming but could be gradually understood one step at a time. Take your time to do some research on the things needed to implement this secret. Though it is very easy to understand, the mere thought of putting up a squeeze page, web design or HTML is simply unfathomable for newbies. One thing to remember, there\’s no such thing as a free lunch. The same with Google PPC. It\’s not FREE, you have to pay for your adword ads, however, this book can help you offset your search engine adwords bills.

Online security is one of the top catch phrases these days, but hardly anybody knows what it means and worse, most home computer users think security only applies to corporations and online businesses.

Most people think online security means simply protecting your credit card data from fraud and theft, but it actually goes way beyond that.

The potential for mayhem and just plain disruption of your life doesn\’t just mean credit card fraud - it can mean having your identity stolen, your life disrupted and spending hours cleaning up after an online \’vandalism\’ attack.

You must protect yourself from everyone from the teenage computer hacker to the organized crime syndicate using computer worms and keystroke logging viruses.

The great news is that a number of simple techniques should protect you against the vast majority of threats, since the evil doers will simply move on to easier pastures.

Update your anti-virus files

The widespread \’Bad Trans\’ worm logged keystrokes and transmitted potentially sensitive data such as credit card and social security numbers to the \’bad guys\’.

Though this virus contained a high level of criminal intent, it was easily blocked by anyone with up-to-date anti-virus files.

If you don\’t have anti-virus software with current virus definitions installed, you leave the door wide open for security problems.

Install a \’Firewall\’

A firewall helps prevent unauthorized access to your computer by \’hackers\’.

It closes off the entry points (called open \’ports\’) carried by virtually every computer connected to the Internet.

A common misconception is that firewalls are only for people with cable or other high-speed connections.

Even if you use a dial up connection to get online, a firewall can help you detect and prevent people from logging on to your computer, stealing files or even using your computer to break into others!

You can take a free test of your computer\’s security by logging on to http://www.symantec.com/securitycheck/ and clicking \’Find out today if you are safe\’. The results may surprise you.

Use secure sites

Only give sensitive data such as credit cards, social security numbers and important passwords over a secure connection.

This means the little yellow lock appears in the lower part of your browser and nobody but the website you are connected to should be able to read the data you send.

Change passwords often

An easy way for you to protect your sensitive data and email is to change your passwords on a monthly basis, or even more often depending on how frequently you use computers away from home.

If you log on to your email at the library, in \’cyber cafes\’ or any other remote computer then the possibility exists that computer could have a key-stroking virus present.

This means everything you type into the computer (passwords, birthdays, social security numbers, credit cards) could be logged and used by someone else.

** Change your passwords at lease once a month.

Though not fool-proof, these security tips should help reduce your vulnerability and keep you safer online.

\r It seems that inter-site linking is all the rage, and most know that just exchanging links with random websites will not get you the rankings you want, and they are right. The days of exchanging links with any and every website out there are over, and have been over for sometime. One is better off identifying their niche, and focusing on obtaining one-way links from websites and directories. This can be done in a variety of ways such as:

  • Writing articles and submitting them to directories

  • Submitting your website to top directories such as joeant and skaffe
  • Giving away free information with the stipulation the user link to where they got the material, which is you
  • Actively participating in forums that match your products, and niche
  • Start a blog and keep it updated
  • Tags
    \r Fortunately, there are head tags that still work over all search engines. The title tag, and the description tag. The meta keyword tag no longer matters in Google, and Yahoos search engines too much, though they are still weighted by msn. Msn actually likes this tag quite a bit, so I would recommend still using your keyphrases in this head tag.

    Keywords
    \r When first starting out, Its best to start with smaller keyphrases then move in to larger ones. This will get you traffic, and keep you afloat, while you go for the bigger ones. Not only that, it gives you sense of accomplishment, and keeps you moving forward. This is very important, as many people get stuck in a rut after about 3-4 months with no rankings, and give up. It\’s important to start small. Not only to pay bills, but to keep you going in the right direction.

    Link Exchanges

    Yes, link exchanges still work. Believe it. Though there are quality standards these days.

    • Only exchange link with websites that are in your general niche market. For example, if had a fishing related website, I would not want to exchange links with a cleaning service website.

  • Do not exchange with website with a single page link directory, with 200 links on it. First off, Google only indexes the first 100 links on each page, and secondly, these types of sites are starting to be punished by Google, Yahoo.
  • Only exchange with a website that has a clearly defined link directory, that is broken down into categories, and is linked from their homepage.
  • Do not exchange with websites that have a grey bar, when using the Google toolbar. This indicates they have been punished by Google, and for linking to them, you could in turn be punished.
  • Keep at it
    \r This could quite possibly be the key to ranking for competitive phrases. You have to stay positive, and keep working steady, everyday. This of course, comes with the stipulation that you have identified the best keyphrases for your site, and are confident of your ability.
