Ahlan Wa Sahlan: Dubai

Airplane Comments Off

Ever been Dubai, no then your missing a lot. Dubai is a beautiful place to be for fun, enjoyment, laugh, recreation or honeymoon, everything goes there.

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city with a population over 1 million that offers a wonderful taste of Arabia, seamlessly combining some of the worlds most exciting tourists developments in a distinctive blend of modern city and desert.

Dubai is considered by many as the Pearl of the Arabian Gulf and is the second largest of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.

Dubai is mainly split in three parts, east of Dubai is called Deira, centrally located is Bur Dubai and the far west of Dubai is Jumeirah Beach. The best thing is you wont get lost because Al Khaleej Road runs from Deira all the way through Bur Dubai and joins Jumeirah Beach Road, and the Jumeirah Beach Road is parallel to the Jumeirah Beach itself. How can you get lost, you cant even if you try.

Dubai\’s central business district is divided into two parts: Diera on the north side of the Creek and Bur Dubai to the south. They are connected by a tunnel and two bridges. But no matter which side you find yourself on, a stroll along its banks will remind you of the city\’s centuries-old trading traditions. And each side has everything you might want, from great hotels and stores to mosques and bustling markets (souks.)You cannot get bored when your in Dubai, because there is just too much to do i.e. water sports, tennis, golf, fishing, adventures, diving, culture and finally shopping.

Where else can you spend a vacation that combines sand dunes and Middle East culture with stunning high rise hotels overlooking pristine beaches and the warm turqouise waters of the Arabian Gulf (also known as the Persian Gulf)? If that\’s not enough, Dubai is a shopper\’s paradise. The tiny emirate is a duty-free zone and during its March Shopping Festival, two million visitors arrive looking for discounts on gold, electronics, clothing, and Persian carpets.

Dubai is competing to be one among the 7 wonders of the world. With its God given oil money, the Dubai Tourism have utilised the land and now they have moved into the sea. They are building what the Arab world has never done before, they are developing The Palm Islands and The Worlds which involves construction of the worlds three largest man-made islands The Palm Jumeirah, The Palm Jebel Ali and The Palm Deira.

The World is an exclusive residential development on a mega scale covering 300 exclusive man-made islands that are currently rising from the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The expected date for completion is 2010. The Islands, which will be visible from the moon with the naked eye, are expected to contribute to Dubais position as a premier global tourist destination and have been hailed as the Eighth Wonder of the World.

In our next issue of Dubai we will discuss the new rise of developments in Dubai.

Can The Airlines Recover From The Perfect Storm?

Airplane Comments Off

If you want to get a glimpse of what air travel was like, three or four decades ago, check out a video from the Golden Age of Hollywood, circa 1960s.

By doing so, youll see what flying was about: big seats, leg room galore, people dressing in their best clothing, and solicitous flight attendants, who actually found their jobs, glamorous.

It was like eating in a four-star restaurant, where todays air passages are more like having hash slung at you in a dusty, roadhouse diner.

What happened to the airlines, and can they recover?

(1) Deregulation. The government used to allow price-fixing in the airline industry, and this enabled fares to be kept high enough so carriers could cover their costs, and then some, still offering edible meals and legroom for all.

(2) Stable Fuel Costs. Until the late 1970s, the price of jet fuel was a constant. Now, it can soar by 50% in a month or two.

(3) September 11. It is a pain to fly, if you do it a lot, for business. Security requirements have cut the business day by two hours, while making the entire process arduous, at best.

(4) Travel Alternatives. Its amazing to see how much web conferencing and telephone conferencing are being substituted for live seminar training, and similar adjustments are being made in other industries.

(5) Business Models Are Changing. One of my professors said if youre a consultant, you have to fly everywhere to do business. Not anymore, because consulting is giving way to coaching and other models that are more local and communication intensive, and not travel intensive. Must I fly? is now the question that professionals are asking, and increasingly, the answer is no.

There will always be air travel, but increasingly, it is going to be a matter of choice, and not compulsion. The airlines, in most cases, have not been able to improve the customer experience in any substantial way, to counteract the effects of the perfect storm that they have faced in the last few decades.

If they hope to thrive, theyre going to have to be a lot more proactive and creative than they have been in a long time.

Interesting Ways to Stop Getting Sick on Long Flights

Airplane Comments Off

These are in no order.

1. Dont stress; Stress can be an easy way to start feeling ill

2. Wear a mask; This could be the best way to avoid catching something off other passengers

3. Take your vitamins; Echinacea. Vitamin C Airbourne

4. Get sleep; Make sure you do not run your body down (two good nights sleep before you leave)

5. Turn off the air vent above you; People sometimes believe the air vent above your head just spreads other passengers germs (the recirculated air passes through several high grade filtering systems (electrostatic and heppa) before it is re-introduced into the cabin. The air is actually \”cleaner\” and more germ free than the air in most office buildings and many people\’s homes. If recirculated air were the culprit, then the pilots, FA\’s and frequent flyers would have perpetual colds)

6. Cold and Flu medicine; Take cold and flu medicine at the first sign of feeling ill

7. Wash your hands; Always wash your hands, Purell the antiseptic soap is a good option

8. Dont rub eyes and face; Avoid constant contact with your face

9. Neosporin; Apply Neosporin around your nostrils before you fly.

People think the thin film will catch anything before it gets into your system.

10. Wipe surfaces; Wiping off surfaces which may have been contaminated by someone sick with an antiseptic might also be of some help. There are many commercial wipes that can sanitize your hands and your surroundings.

11. Avoid Alcohol; Dont drink alcohol before you leave

These are in no order and some are old wives tales so take them all with a grain of salt. You may find some that work for you.

Some are just common sense.

U.S./U.K. Airline Carry-On Restrictions Are Now In Effect

Airplane Comments Off

On August 10, authorities in the United Kingdom announced that a major terrorist plot to smuggle bombs on American airlines traveling from London to the U.S. was thwarted. If you\’re planning to travel to Great Britain for either business or pleasure, you\’ll need to be aware of new security restrictions in place regarding carry-on luggage. Because the summer travel season is in full force, you\’ll probably run into some major delays prior to the boarding process.

Because the alleged plot involved the smuggling of liquid explosives, disguised as beverages, security officials on both sides of the Atlantic (as well as around the world) are taking unprecedented steps to protect airline passengers traveling from Heathrow, Gatwick and other major U.K. airports. Although delays, cancellations, inconvenience and chaos has ensued, the flying public should try their best to understand the reason for the security measures and take steps to prepare themselves before leaving for the airport. Travelers are urged to be at the airport here in the U.S. and also in the U.K. at least three hours prior to takeoff in order to undergo the additional necessary security screenings and bag checks.

If you\’re planning on flying on one of the 100+ daily flights between the U.S. and U.K., you\’ll need to pay close attention to the following lists of do\’s and don\’ts:

Flying FROM the U.S. to the United Kingdom: You may carry on approved electronic items (like laptops, cell phones and iPods), but you must pack all liquids and gels in your checked luggage. This includes beverages of all kinds, shampoo and conditioner, suntan lotion, lotions, toothpaste, hair mousse and gel, and \”other items of similar consistency.\”

Flying FROM the United Kingdom to the U.S.: No purses, carry-ons or electronic items are allowed. Only allowable items (listed below) can be taken on board in a single clear plastic bag. Nothing will be allowed in your pockets. The allowable items are as follows:

- pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (money, credit cards, identity cards, etc.)

- essential travel documents (passports and travel tickets)

- prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (a diabetic kit for example), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic; the name on the bottle must match the name on the airline ticket

- eyeglasses and sunglasses (cases are NOT allowed)

- contact lens cases (saline solution is NOT allowed)

- female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight if unboxed

- handkerchiefs or unboxed tissues

- keys (electrical key fobs are NOT allowed and must be checked)

- non-liquid duty free purchases

- if traveling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (wipes, creams, disposal bags)

Major airlines have offered to waive excess baggage fees, to a point, until approximately August 17. Checking with the airlines for individual policies prior to departure is definitely the way to go.

Top Tips for Reducing your Business Class and First Class Airfare

Airplane Comments Off

Here are 10 more top tips for getting cheaper first class and business class airfares:

1. Always join the frequent flyer programs of the airlines you fly on. You should try to have loyalty membership from at least 2 of the major world alliances. If you can attain elite status you will enjoy special perks such as free lounge access, upgrade priority and seating privileges. Some airlines in the US will automatically upgrade elite members to first class if there is space available.

2. Check out some of the trans-Atlantic all-business class carriers such as MaxJet and EOS Airlines. MaxJet operates a Boeing 767 with 102 business class seats of 60 pitch. It is possible to fly from New York to London for as low as $750 return on Maxjet this is a great deal and is cheaper than many economy fares. A new all business class airline SilverJet is set to join the market by the end of the year with flights from London Luton to Newark New York.

3. Also consider flying with some of the more off-beat airlines such as Air India, Pakistan International, Iceland Air and Kuwait Airways they all fly between the US and the UK and will undercut the business class cabins of the major carriers by up to 60%.

4. If flying from West coast USA to Asia, consider one of the minor Asian carriers such as EVA, China Airlines and Korean - they often have very good value deals to many Asian cities. Chinatown consolidators are another source of low airfares to Asia.

5. Stay informed! Watch out for occasional special offer business class fares available on the major airlines - you should always be signed up to their mailing lists. The major airlines like British Airways have recently cut some trans-Atlantic business class airfares in response to the discount all-business class carriers.

6. Ask if you can purchase an upgrade to business class at the airport. This can be done at check-in, at the gate or in the frequent flyer lounge. Airlines can offer one-way upgrades on international flights for as little as $200 this is significantly cheaper than booking a business class or first class ticket outright.

7. If available buy a premium economy seat - this is a class between coach and business class on an international flight. You are much more likely to get a free upgrade if the flight happens to be overbooked due to the very limited number of premium economy seats.

8. Buy an economy class ticket and then use your frequent flyer air miles / points to purchase an upgrade to business or first class.

9. If commercial airlines are too \’low brow\’ for you and you wish to fly by executive business jet then get a quote on an empty leg fare which can save you up to 75% off the normal jet charter fare - this can be exceptionally good value. Alternatively, consider a fractional ownership program such as the one offered by NetJets which can be more cost effective for a group of travellers than buying full fare first class tickets.

10. Get up to speed on first class air travel by investing in a good insider guide which can help you fathom out the airfare market and get you that elusive upgrade.

The \’Ultimate Airfares & Upgrades Guide\’ is an ebook available from AirTravelGenius.com. You will learn many insider tips and tricks on finding the world\’s very lowest airfares - from first class to economy class, getting superb value from air miles and the inside track on upgrades. A must for any international air traveller the guide is available from http://www.airtravelgenius.com.

Great Aircraft - The Tupolev TU-160 Blackjack

Airplane Comments Off

The Tupolev TU-160 Blackjack is a Russian built strategic bomber that first flew in 1981.The Blackjack bears a strong resemblance to the North American B-1 but there are some very significant differences.

The TU 160 was built for long-range delivery of nuclear and conventional weapons. The Blackjack can operate in all weather conditions day or night in any climate. The aircraft was a collaboration between the Tupolev Aircraft Corporation and the Gorbunov Aircraft Company. The crew of the TU-160 consists of four people, a pilot, co-pilot, navigator, and a systems operator. The crew sits in zero/zero ejection seats, which means that they\’re able to safely eject in all flight regimes including zero altitude/zero airspeed (when parked on the ground).

The cockpit consists of conventional electro-mechanical \”steam\” gauges. The designers did not incorporate a glass cockpit type system, heads up displays, cathode ray tubes or LCD screens. Similarly to the U.S. built F-16, the TU-160 does use fly by wire. Instead of a yoke the Blackjack pilot uses a stick to manipulate the flight controls, which gives an indication of its maneuverability especially for such a large aircraft.

The Blackjack is powered by four Kuznetsov NK-321 Turbofan engines each rated at 30,900 lbs (dry thrust) and 55,100 lbs (afterburner thrust). The TU-160 has a distinct shape. The wing and fuselage blend into a single piece configuration. The variable geometry wings are able to sweep forward to 20 degrees for low speed flight and sweep back to 65 degrees fro high-speed subsonic and supersonic flight. The horizontal and vertical tail surfaces consist of one piece each and the entire surface moves.

The Blackjack has a maximum speed of 1,380 mph (Mach 2.05), an unrefueled combat radius of 6530 miles and an unrefueled maximum range of 10,815 miles. It has a service ceiling of 50,00 ft and a climb rate of 14,000 ft/minute. The ability of the bomber to refuel in-flight gives it almost a limitless range, the endurance of the crew being the limiting factor.

TU-160 flights that probe the limits of US and NATO airspace are increasing. Allied air crews are sharpening their intercept skills against one of Russia\’s mightiest bombers.

Mirrors to Redirect Mini Laser Weapons on Fighters for Vortex Airflows

Airplane Comments Off

Recently a new airborne laser system was announced to be put onto fighter jets, once this technology becomes more advanced we will no longer need missiles for air-to-air combat. The system, which will go onto a fighter jet would be called the; HELLADS or High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System, it is being tested now. It would be a system based on Israels THEL system which is a mobile Tactical High Energy Laser

I propose we have a set of mirrors in front of the aircraft redirecting the high-energy laser beam to areas above and below the wings and airfoils. This would blast the air and/or create vortexs, which would enhance lift which would allow for mini-tornado sucking of air over the wing in critical high angle of attack positions. During the firing of the weapon the mirrors would be retracted back into the front of the fuselage on a pole protruding in the front of the aircraft similar to this pole on this Bell X-1 Aircraft:

http://users.dbscorp.net/jmustain/x-1.jpg

On the front of the tip of the pole would be a fold out system, which would expand out like a cone similar to the catch nets used for aerial refueling. Inside the cone protected from the relative wind would be the mirrors for redirection of the lasers to points near the boundary layer of air above the wing. There would be a grid system on the mirror to makes sure the right amount of energy was directed by the onboard computer system connected to the pilots input of the joy stick control. All this would synchronize with the amount of air needed to maintain airflow needed in the intakes for air and the thrust vectoring jets for stability. When not in use for evasive maneuvering the pole would retract into the nose of the aircraft.

We need an off shoot of this technology which is being tested by General Atomics and Lockheed to prove my concept will work. We can use redirected or reflected laser cannon beams to increase stability in transitional flight situations to prevent departure of the aircraft from flight, by changing the air around the airfoils and control surfaces, please be thinking here.

Air Charter Exchange

Airplane Comments Off

Air Charter services allow individuals like executives, heads of state and celebrities, corporations, or groups to charter airplanes for their use for non-commercial flights. Air Charter flights are more convenient than travel on commercial flights because Air Charter can provide a direct flight to nearly any where in the world. Air charter exchange will deal with all monetary issues related to air charter travel.

In the air charter business, cancellations are a major issue. The air charters are booked for a particular purpose, and a contract is immediately prepared. During the contract period, the air charter is reserved, and no other charter trip can be undertaken. However, if there is a sudden cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances, the payment and contract rules are often violated. At such times, the rate of cancellation is a percentage of the whole price and ranges form 25 to 50%. It can even go as high as 90%, if the aircraft is actually ready for takeoff.

Air charter exchange involves demurrage, which is a charge for keeping the aircraft waiting. Charging a demurrage fee is a very rare occurrence, and is more of a threat to keep air charter services running smoothly. Demurrage will not occur if you are leasing an air charter full time.

Apart from the monetary aspect, air charter exchange also relates to an organization\’s set up to get information about the air travel industry and air charter services. This constitutes all major companies that use the air charter services, and those that are related to it. It also has its own group of members who update information on the air industry and circulate it among clients through regular publications.

Air Charter provides detailed information on Air Charter, Air Charter Services, Corporate Air Charter, Group Air Charter and more. Air Charter is affiliated with Cheap Airline Flight.

Cone Shaped Undercarriage Ground Cushion for Rotor Craft

Airplane Comments Off

Helicopters have become part of modern life in the world. They are able to help us watch the news, move executives around and do jobs which there is no other way to do, such as search and rescue efforts or wild fire fighting.

We rely on Helicopters in wartime also to move our troops without risking the hazards of roadside bombs, ambush or small arms fire. Lets face it we need helicopter for so many important human endeavors not only in our own nation like in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, but also in other nations to help those civilization grown and survive.

Without helicopters many would die each year for failure to evac them to hospitals or bring them supplies like after the Sumatra Earthquake and Indonesia Tsunami or Pakistan Earthquake. Unfortunately Helicopters are somewhat dangerous and therefore they can also cause risks in their usage.

We need to find other ways to make helicopters safer, by increasing performance and increasing flight envelopes. I propose using a cone shaped undercarriage to harness the ground cushion affect without adversely causing too much increased drag or counteract the downward force of the rotor blade. The cone would slightly divert downward airflow forces and redirect it under the cone. The thickened air would then push up on the helicopter without helping in increasing its performance. Think on this in 2006.

Flying into the Murcia Airport

Airplane Comments Off

Murcia is located approximately forty-five miles south of Alicante in the Costa Blanca region of Spain. It is situated along the beautiful coastline of the Mediterranean Sea. If you plan to travel to this southern region, though, you should know that the city of Murcia does not have an airport. Though called the Murcia Airport, this airport is actually located in San Javier which is approximately seventeen miles south of the Murcia. The airport is both an air base and a civilian airport and is operated by the Spanish Airport Authority headquartered in Madrid. The airport has grown from a small airport to a larger airport offering flights from all over the world. With such growth, there are now more choices in flights and airlines as well as a variety of discount airlines offering lower priced tickets.

This airport has become much more popular as tourists visit the southern area of the Costa Blanca. This area is particularly popular with travelers from the United Kingdom. Fortunately, as the popularity of this airport increases, the airlines expand their choices offered giving travelers more flights, services and cheaper fares from which to choose. Currently, around 848,000 people fly into Murcia annually and it continues to increase. In addition to the discount airlines, some charter airlines also operate out of the airport as this is a popular location for charter groups to the Costa Blanca region.

Upon arrival at the airport, you will need to find transportation to reach your final destination whether in Murcia or a nearby city. You should plan ahead, as there is not bus or train connection at the airport. You can take a taxi or arrange for a car hire or airport transfer, both of which must be reserved in advance. An airport transfer is probably the easiest and most cost-effective transportation to and from the airport. It is a good option for those traveling in large groups since a taxi or car can fit only four individuals at one time and a limited amount of luggage. Transfers are available to the larger surrounding cities as well as train stations. Contact the company directly or a travel agent to make the appropriate reservations and ensure your transportation is available when your flight lands.

If you choose to use a car hire, you can arrange for these services at the airport. It is a good idea, though, to make the reservation before you leave home to ensure a car is available and get the best price. Four car hire companies operate out of the airport: Centuaro, Europa, Solmar and Eurocar. All four companies can be found in the main terminal building, but of course you can contact them ahead of time and make your reservation. If you intend to travel throughout the Costa Blanca area, a car hire company may be the better transportation to choose.
