Business Women - Is One of Your Issues Running an Effective Organization?

10:25 pm RSS Feed Icon Management

Women business owners have the advantage of knowing how to run an effective organization given their skill sets in managing and running their homes. Women are committed to doing the right thing from raising children to being an active member in the community.

There are challenges that women face in running an effective business or organization. One of the obvious challenges is balance between the two fronts - home and business. Taking care of home front responsibilities including cooking, reviewing homework if children are present to keeping everyone on target must always be balanced with client meetings, managing employees to growing the business. This desire for balance may be one reason why many women businesses do not exceed $1,000,000 in sales.

Another challenge is one faced by many entrepreneurs - trying to wear all of the hats of running an organization. Being chief cook to bottle washer may work in the home, but may potentially fail in the organization.

Looking at your role and the potential income that your role delivers is the best place to start. If you are best at sales, then maybe you should hire someone else to do the administrative functions from answering the phone to billing? However, if your strength is building relationships, then your time should be invested at networking events and handing off the sales to a professional sales person.

Returning to the word effective also suggests that your organization should always be doing the right thing. To keep everyone's behavior on the right track suggests that you should have a clearly articulated strategic plan where everyone knows the:

  • Current non-negotiable behaviors (values statement)
  • Path or direction of the business (vision statement)
  • Business expectations (mission statement)

If you have a larger company, you may wish to have an organizational assessment delivered by an outside firm. This assessment should be aligned to specific criteria such as Baldrige (one of the best predictors for organizational success and therefore effectiveness). By employing this tactic, you can determine if the strategic plan and business goals are being embraced by all employees.

Organizational effectiveness truly starts with a plan and ends with the achieved business goals within that plan based upon your values of doing the right thing or things. Your business success returns to how you run the organization and is all about your self leadership skills as well as your own values.
