As Jim Hunter expressed at Festival College, "people need to be reminded more than instructed." We already know and understand the tenets of Servant Leadership, but what really makes the difference is being reminded of these ideas and practicing them everyday. When we give these ideas the opportunity to sink in and become a part of our everyday lives, this is when we really succeed. Patience
Jim Hunter defines patience as "showing self control." He continues, "The leader must model good behavior for the players, kids, employees, or whomever they are leading. If the leader is screaming or otherwise out of control, you sure can't expect the team to be under control or behave responsibly either." Hunter maintains that it is crucial to create an environment that is safe for people to make mistakes. "The leader has a responsibility to hold people accountable. However, there are several ways to point out deficiencies while allowing people to keep their dignity." A leader's job is to point out any gaps between expected behavior and actual performance, but do not allow it to become an emotional event. Leaders often "choose to make it an emotional event, but it doesn't have to be that way." Keep in mind, we are all leaders in our own way and all have a responsibility to practice patience.
"Patience is the companion of wisdom."
-St. Augustine
"Patience is the ability to idle your motors when you feel like stripping your gears."
